Classes for Kids and Families
There will be no Kids and Families class during July and August. Classes resume August 22 and Sunday Brunch resumes August 29.
Sundays, 12:15 - 1:15pm, with Gen Atisha at Vajrarupini Buddhist Center in Bankers Hill
Even as adults we experience stress, fatigue, confusion, disappointment, and anxiety. Children have fewer responsibilities than adults, but do they have fewer fears? Fewer worries? Less stress?
Everyone needs to learn about their own mind. This is basic education that is not taught in schools, not common in our society, and not readily understood even by adults. The basic premises of Buddhist meditation are not difficult to learn, and if they have the support of a spiritual community and the inspiration of those who have gained spiritual insights, even children can learn to practice patience, loving-kindness, ethics, contentment, and peace. Often by the time they're teenagers, children have already laid down their formative ideas about what makes life worth living, how to solve our problems, and how to interact with others. We need to help them understand these subjects with wisdom.
Now you have help available in the form of classes on Buddhism and meditation for families and kids (emphasizing ages 4-12). From week to week you'll learn practical tools that you can apply yourself, and share with your children and family. The classes will begin with everyone together, meditating, singing brief prayers, and listening to inspiring stories. Children will then gather separately in our adjacent community room together with several teachers for teachings and activities appropriate for their age. Adults will remain in the meditation room to contemplate further teachings and learn methods to embody peace and clarity, and to lead by example. Finally, everyone will gather together again for concluding advice and to make a final prayer.
Everyone is welcome to these classes, regardless of background. To add to the treat, we will be serving a delicious vegetarian brunch at the Center from 11:30am-12:15pm, just before the class. Come for brunch, or just come for the Families class. You don't need to bring or wear anything special, except something to write with if you want to take notes. Both chairs and cushions will be available, depending on your preference. There is a cost of $10 per family. |
